Guide To Free (Or Cheap) Building Materials

Do you need a backyard storage shed, but feel you cannot afford the high cost of building materials? Have you ever contemplated building a summer cabin or perhaps a house but the cost of materials is prohibitive? These projects may seem like something you would just as soon leave to the hired professionals, especially for us carpentry challenged folks, but what if you just want materials for a planter to showcase your special flowers or a new home for "Fido"? I am about to make a bold proclamation by stating that you can get the materials you need for FREE! Yes, you heard it right...FREE! "How," you ask, "might this be possible?" Listen closely my friends, and I will show you how to do just that.

Before we begin, I should let you in on the only two things you will need to accomplish this seemingly impossible task of finding free materials...patience, and flexibility. The reasoning behind these two very important attributes shall become clear as we move along.

The first step is to decide what materials you need for your project, and also some alternatives that will work if necessary. This is where the flexibility comes in. You may not get the "exact" materials you need, but some alternatives are just as good. Suppose you are building a deck on the summer cabin. If you are vying for a position in the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" you probably wouldn't read this far into this article, so I am guessing that functionality and price considerations are more important than beautiful craftsmanship. I would suggest using pallets as a starting point. They are sturdy, easy to assemble, and readily available. Plus they can be covered later for a more aesthetic appearance. We built a porch on our cabin using pallets that we covered with decking material that we later found. Check lumberyards, electrical/plumbing supply outlets, door and window shops, just about any place that receives large shipments of merchandise. These places are easily identified by the monstrous stacks of pallets in the alley or behind the building, and most places will give you as many as you want. Electric companies are also good sources for the large wire spools that make excellent patio tables, birdbath stands, and any other use you might imagine.

Guide To Free (Or Cheap) Building Materials

Always be on the lookout for neighbors and others that are doing their own remodeling projects. They often have discarded materials and are happy to give them away rather than having them hauled off at their expense. For our cabin, we asked a home remodeler for unwanted materials and that's where we acquired the doors, windows, roof sheathing, stove pipe, screws, nails, among other things.

Many times you might find elderly residents who would love to have their yard cleared of years worth of accumulated stuff, but they are incapable of doing the job themselves and not financially able to hire someone to do it for them. Make a deal to clean their yard in exchange for the materials.

Local lumber mills have mountains of byproduct that is unusable for their purposes but perfect for many homeowner projects. Check with the office for availability and restrictions.

Old discarded tires are strewn all over the countryside, but may just turn into a beautiful landscape piece for the artistic homeowner, or filled with cement to become shed supports. Automobile junkyards may offer useable materials for the visionary builder...use your imagination. Pickup bench seats can be conformed into unusual but classic breakfast niche booth seats.

You will most assuredly have more success in your quest for free materials if you become a Classified Ad reader. Read them every day. Look for anything that says "free" but be sure to call early because these things go fast. There is a gold mine waiting to be had for the asking. Many times you might find free items just because you are willing to haul them away. If you are really energetic, you may find an ad for a house to be torn down in exchange for the materials. Here is a great source for lumber, bricks and blocks, trusses, windows, doors, plumbing fixtures, and the list goes on.

New construction sites offer a plethora of material gathering options. Many times there will be a huge dumpster on site for material discards that may be just the thing you are looking for. You may find dimension lumber, insulation, electrical wiring, PVC pipe, etc. Please be sure to check with the construction foreman before taking these materials.

If you happen to need "like new" building materials without the exorbitant cost, check your surrounding communities for a salvage lumberyard. These establishments offer "scratch and dent" or otherwise rejected building materials at substantial discounts.

As you can see, there are endless possibilities when it comes to recycling "pre-owned" building materials, but a better price cannot be found. Forethought must be applied and sometimes you must patiently wait for the perfect opportunity, but the end result will be well worth the effort. Just keep your eyes open and don't be afraid to think outside the box.

List Of Cold Water Fish For Aquariums And Their Tips Of Care

There are essentially 4 types of Cold water fish commonly found in aquariums. There are listed below together with their tips of care.

Gold Fish

Tips 1: Ideal temperature 18-24 °C (64-75 °F)

List Of Cold Water Fish For Aquariums And Their Tips Of Care

Tips 2: 60 Gallons tank for 3 fancy goldfish or 2 common or 2 comet goldfish. 2.5cm (1 in) of fish per 60 sq cm (9.3 sq in) of tank water surface area is the bare minimum. Remember we must base the calculations on the adult size of the fish.

Tips 3: A full-sized canister or hang-on filter

Tips 4: Use Air stone

Tips 5: Weekly water changes of 30-50%

Tips 6: No dangerous items in aquarium (decorations or rocks)

Tips 7: No Plecosotomus

The goldfish is the most common type of Coldwater species kept. It can live in an unheated aquarium. As they are of the carp family, goldfish produce a large amount of waste both in their feces and through their gills, releasing harmful chemicals into the water. This is because goldfish like other cyprinids, is without a stomach and only have an intestinal tract, and thus cannot digest an excess of proteins. Build-up of this waste to toxic levels can occur in a relatively short period of time, which is often the cause of a fish's sudden death. Temperatures under about 10 °C (50 °F) are dangerous to goldfish. Conversely, temperatures over 25 °C (77 °F) can be extremely damaging for goldfish. Their tanks need extensive filtration. The best style of filter for a goldfish tank is a full-sized canister or hang-on filter Aeration is very important since goldfish have very high oxygen requirements, thus air stone or other means should be used. Regular water changes are necessary for a healthy aquarium. Most goldfish tanks require a weekly water change of about 30 - 50% to keep the aquarium in proper working order. Large, smooth gravel is most preferred since goldfish will sift through the gravel all day long and you don't want them to swallow rocks or cutting their mouths. Live plants aren't usually kept with goldfish because they absolutely love to munch on them. Delicate goldfish such as Bubble-Eyes or Telescope-Eyes should not be kept in an aquarium with sharp rocks. There shouldn't be any decorations with holes or caves smaller than the goldfish can swim through without scraping their sides and/or stomachs. Never keep Plecostomus with gold fish, as they love for the thick slime coating on a goldfish's body. Many goldfish dies from the Pleco's assault.

White cloud

Tips 1: Ideal Temperature 18-24 °C (64-75 °F)

Tips 2: 2 feet tank for 20 white clouds (maximum of 35).

Tips 3: Keep in a group of more than 6.

Tips 4: 20% weekly water changes

The White clouds stays small (4cm) is ideal to keep in smaller aquariums. They have a wide temperature tolerance and can survive water temperatures as low as 5°C (41°F). But the ideal water temperature will be 18-24 °C (64-75 °F). They need a well planted tank with open space to swim. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 6 or more. They are very peaceful and can be housed with other type of community fish (Dianos) that shares the same water condition. Good filtration with gentle current is needed for them to stay happy.

Koi

Tips 1: Ideal Temperature 18-24 °C (64-75 °F)

Tips 2: 1200 gallon pond with 12 full size koi

Tips 3: Good Mechanical Filtration

Tips 4: More than 10% water changes weekly

A Koi pond needs to provide clean, well oxygenated water in order to produce a healthy environment for fish to live and grow. The basic requirements are: To be large enough to accommodate the potential size that Koi can grow to (24 inches / 60cm plus). A pond of around 8 feet x 6 feet and 4 feet deep (2.5m x 2m x 1.2m) containing approx' 1200 gallons (5500L) would be a sensible minimum for keeping Koi in the temperate climates. Koi produce large amounts of solid waste, so your ponds' filter system must have good mechanical filtration to remove solids from the water. The mechanical filter can be in the form of nylon brushes, plastic media or a vortex that slowly spins the water and allows larger, heavier particles to settle out. The mechanical filter must be easy to clean and if it is fed from a bottom drain must have a valve to shut it off from the pond for regular cleaning. It is recommended to clean this section on at least a weekly basis. Even with the best filter systems, frequent water changes are essential to keep your fish in good health and obtain maximum growth. 10% a week is a good minimum to aim at, in an averagely stocked pond. Your biological filter will break down Ammonia but there are many others by products of the fishes' metabolism that will gradually build up unless water changes are carried out.

Diano

Tips 1: Ideal Temperature 18-24 °C (64-75 °F)

Tips 2: 2 feet tank for 20 Dianos (Maximum 30)

Tips 3: Keep in a group of more than 6.

Tips 4: 20% weekly water changes

Basically, the care for Diano is almost similar to the white clouds. The only difference here is that Diano are slightly larger than white cloud. Diano can grow to 5cm while White cloud typically max out at 4cm. Dianos and White clouds can be kept together and they will school together in groups.

Team Work - Advantages and Disadvantages

A a team work has assigned almost only advantages. We can see them and name them. Meanwhile, work in a team also has small disadvantages, usually hard to see them in our everyday work. Why it's worth to work in a team and why sometimes not?

When we are talking about team work we mean that a team leader formulates tasks and team realizes it together but using the strengths of individual members. This form allows you to avoid job losses, as the activities are subject to internal audit and evaluation at each stage, and organizational activities are rationalized up.

Also when a group of intelligent people is talking about one common subject and looking for best solution they usually find the answer to their questions. Why? Because we are all different and while speaking one mind is stimulating another one and that's how the best ideas and solution usually comes up during brainstorming.

Team Work - Advantages and Disadvantages

And as we speaking of brainstorm and conversation it is very important to know how to speak with the colleagues and communicate every doubts and needs about work. Also listen actively, share suggestions and don't hide bad feelings. Letting bad feelings brew can sometimes isolate one person from the group. And that in a longer term can make this person feel not loyal to all the group. And loyalty is what in team work is most important - it makes the team feel secure with each other.

When working in a team there are no losers and no winners. That, despite of obvious advantage (no one loses anything), can be a big disadvantage - no one takes a blame and no one can feel really good of gained success. If no one is responsible for each task sometimes no one knows who is doing what and the job might not be done at all.

If we have situation that the group of people consists mostly of leaders their team work might just not simply...work. What's worse, a few people in the group who are not the leader types can be pushed aside by they colleagues and have a problem to do their jobs. Leaders would be concentrated on achieving the goal and won't care about helping other team members and socialazing with them and won't become a good team.

It is worth to work in a team having in mind those few disadvantages. Most of them can came up when the team is not very well and people don't like each other. Also sometimes when people don't know how to work in a team. That's why it is worth to try a team development course and practise social skills.
